Because of the risk of cross-contamination, the septic surgery room must be strictly separated from other specialized disciplines. The OR is configured with a universally applicable operating table, designed to accommodate any surgical procedure associated with acute and chronic infections, or the replacement of infected endoprostheses.

The head and foot ends of the operating room are outfitted with an anesthetic ceiling supply unit and a surgical ceiling supply unit especially equipped for the discipline. The operating table, with surgical lights and one additional monitor arm above, is located in the center point of the room.

The area of this OR should be about 52 m². Because of the high requirement for bacteria-free air in the operating field, the operating room should be designed with an LAF outlet or individual air outlets. The room’s bacteria-free air supply is thereby ensured by terminal HEPA filters (H13/H14). Exhaust air and/or circulating air treatment should be provided for this operating room. Germ transmission into adjoining rooms must be prevented by the use of negative pressure.
